What's the problem? Finding interesting math topics within a PhD project.

Doing a PhD is not just about solving problems, it is also about finding the right ones! Research projects often provide a great deal of freedom, but with that freedom comes the challenge of identifying worthwhile topics to work on. Questions that are relevant, mathematically interesting, and still unsolved can be few and far between. Drawing on examples from my project on algorithms for data centers, we explore the challenge of finding the "right" problem to tackle.
