Leerstoelcase DMMP 'Traffic Flows: Equilibria, Braess Paradox, and the Price of Anarchy' @ Citadel H327
Tuesday 14 Dec 2010 from 13:45 until 16:30
Ja hij is er weer: een nieuwe leerstoelcase! Deze keer nemen we een kijkje bij Discrete Mathematics and Mathematical Programming. Hier staat een korte omschrijving van de case: We are going to analyze a practically relevant problem: The analysis of (street) networks that need to accommodate a certain amount of traffic. In traffic situations, we are often faced with the problem that individual drivers act selfishly in the own interest, but do not care about the overall system performance. This results in equilibrium solutions which are in general suboptimal, traffic jams being a well known example. The "price of anarchy" measures by how much the performance of a system deteriorates due to the lack of central coordination. We will also pass along some amazing effects, such as the Braess paradox, which shows that -counterintuitively- additional streets can even worsen the overall traffic.Nieuwjaarsborrel @ Abscint
